Total solar energy generation in the country reached new highs last year, totaling 8.3 TWh. Solar accounted for 11.9% of Belgium’s electricity generation mix in 2024, according to data released by Elia, the country’s transmission system operator. The share of solar in the electricity mix was up from 9.5% in 2023.
Last year, several EU countries made adjustments to their National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs), which set renewable energy targets for EU member states until 2030. Belgium's target was to commission 8.9GW of solar capacity by the end of 2023.
Solar power directly contributes to the Belgium ’s energy security and independence, as well as helping to meet rising electricity demand and CO2 emission reduction goals. The rapid solar photovoltaic installations were primarily due to ongoing supportive government policies and initiatives and a sharp decline in technology and PV system costs.
